This was music for Minstrels Past, a large-scale dance production for University of Michigan choreographer Robin Wilson. It is an audio mix of early African-American minstrel music, ring-shout of the sea-coastal islands of Georgia, early jazz, 60's soul, and hip-hop. Robin wanted to focus on the way African-American stereotypes are perpetuated through the media. In her choreography, she looked for stylistic similarities and choreographic motives between African-American dance of different periods in history. Hence, in providing a soundtrack, I searched for ways that the music of these different periods could work together. |
