Primal Suite for piano was written in 1989, the first concert piece of mine ever performed. Originally a five movement work, it was also my first composition to win a prize (BMI, 1990), and it encouraged my decision to focus my energies on music composition. Like many dance suites, they are not necessarily meant to be DANCED TO, but to EVOKE a dance through music. And, instead of referring to particular styles of DANCE (corrente, sarabande, gigue, etc.), I was more interested in evoking general patterns of MOVEMENT which occur naturally in the world (running, floating, swirling, etc.). Nouns and verbs NEED each other. |
